Happy Pepero Day!

A week or so ago, I noticed a large chocolate-and-pink-balloons-and-hearts display at E-Mart-uh (see below), and thought to myself, Weird. Valentine's Day isn't for three months yet.

Pepero Day display at E-Mart
Shows what I know. True, it's not Valentine's Day exactly, which is named after a saint; it's Pepero Day, named after a candy. In fact, some argue the holiday was created by a candy company, Lotte, who makes Pepero. Yes, Pepero is actually a brand of candy. But, so what? Many of the same people would argue that Mother's Day in America was created by the florist industry.

Pepero, by Lotte
What is Pepero? It's a thin cookie stick coated in mediocre-quality chocolate. The date 11/11 was chosen because it resembles four sticks--Pepero sticks!
NB: Unlike a certain other blogger in my Blog List who ripped his photo for Pepero Day from somewhere on the web, the photos in this post are Certified Tuttle.

Incidentally, 11/11 is also Armistice Day in England, recognizing the end of WWI, and Veterans Day in the US. You may wish to pause a moment to remember the sacrifice of those who have fought and died to preserve our freedoms.

In China, 11/11 is 'singles' day. Singles -- as in lonely people with no one to annoy them every morning. It was discussed today in the office. The others (all young Chinese) told me the date 11/11 was chosen because the 1's resemble loneliness, or solitary figures. I noted that each 1 is 'standing' with another 1, so might these be couples? No, they said. I asked what one does (ha, get it, what ONE does) to 'celebrate' Singles Day, and they said, "Get together with other singles."

This shit is getting out of hand.

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Two can be as bad as one, it's the loneliest number since the number one. --Three Dog Night

(Yes, now I just spend my time making rhymes of yesterday.)

Tanner, Korea has a 'Black Day' for single people. It is April 14, if I recall. Valentines Day being Feb 14 and White Day being March 14.

Tuttle, even though you may have taken your own pictures, my blog post came out like sixteen hours before yours. If you want to copy my material, at least try to do it in a timely fashion.

I proudly stole my pictures from the web. I do not deny it. If I actually remembered to carry my camera around with me, I'd have gotten better shots. Sadly for everyone, I don't. I have to get photo support from others.

Dear Andrew and Andrew:

You are both careful wordsmiths and worthy bloggers, but apparently have never heard that "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Ergo, when you use someone else's picture (especially w/o proper attribution--ahem!) you are using a thousand of someone else's words!

I may be a crap photog--I wouldn't exactly deny it--but at least my images are my expressions, and not some shit I stole from Wikipedia or Flickr.

So, to paraphrase Cavett, fold your pepero photo five ways and stick it where the moon don't shine.

Oh, and have a nice day!
